Super Clichรฉ but Also - Super Relatable

Anyone who has spent any amount of time with me (or even those who have just heard a bit about me) probably know these few things about me: Iโ€™m a mom; I have been in therapy/recovery for almost 5 years; and Iโ€™m a total geek, love to learn and love to read.

So, with that in mind - I have been working through some things and I wanted to share some of those things that have been extremely helpful.

I struggle a lot with over-thinking.  With the way that we are inundated by technology and the fast paced whirl of society in general, itโ€™s no wonder why so many people struggle with this.  Here are my favourite ways to battle my racing thoughts and [often] unnecessary worrying.

This actually serves two purposes.
Taking 10 minutes away from screens is a nice break.  I also enjoy the feel of a nice pen and fresh sheet of notepaper (maybe thatโ€™s just me).
But it helps me to be able to focus on the subject of my overthinking, away from the distractions of my cell phone/laptop/tablet.  Thereโ€™s tons of research that says that getting away from our tech will help with worrying less and sleeping better.
๐ต๏ผ‰๐‘‡โ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘ค๐‘Ÿ๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” ๐‘š๐‘Ž๐‘˜๐‘’๐‘  ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘œ๐‘ข๐‘”โ„Ž๐‘ก๐‘  ๐‘–๐‘›๐‘ก๐‘œ ๐‘ ๐‘œ๐‘š๐‘’๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘–๐‘›๐‘” ๐‘ก๐‘Ž๐‘›๐‘”๐‘–๐‘๐‘™๐‘’ ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘Ž๐‘ก ๐‘๐‘Ž๐‘› ๐‘๐‘’ ๐‘๐‘ข๐‘ก ๐‘Ž๐‘ค๐‘Ž๐‘ฆ๏ผŽNow, once Iโ€™ve written all the things clouding my mind down - I can put the paper away (or burn it, as the case is when I really need to let go of something).  Often, Iโ€™ll leave it for 24 hours and tell myself Iโ€™ll get back to it thenโ€ฆteaching my brain to push it aside to get through my day.  And so often, once I go back to it, that it wasnโ€™t nearly worth the worry that accompanied it.  Iโ€™m learning to challenge my thinking more and more.  Going back to my mindset 24 hours prior to setting it aside, often Iโ€™ve had the appointment or new information that shows me I was worrying unnecessarily.

Letโ€™s be real here - sometimes ๐‘™๐‘–๐‘“๐‘’ ๐‘—๐‘ข๐‘ ๐‘ก ๐‘ ๐‘ข๐‘๐‘˜๐‘ ๏ผŽThereโ€™s no way to put a positive spin on the fact that you have overdue bills BUT thinking about the fact that you have overdue bills, you can positively reframe by telling yourself that at least you have an income, at least your rent is paid or something along those lines.  Or, thinking how youโ€™ve come through situations like this before and have always been resourceful with figuring it out.
Another take on this concept is when I find myself worrying about other people in my life or that Iโ€™m encountering and instead of worrying and assuming the worst, why not think of the best reasons?  Like, maybe my boss is cutting my hours because she truly wants me to succeed and sees me stressed from taking on too much.  Maybe my meeting with her about my tardiness is meant to help me target my issues - not just a necessary step she has to take to fire me.

Itโ€™s been said that when you show gratitude it makes you an all around happier person. It sounds so cheesy ๏ผ ๐‘๐‘ข๐‘ก ๐‘œ๐‘› ๐‘กโ„Ž๐‘’ ๐‘‘๐‘Ž๐‘ฆ๐‘  ๐ผ ๐‘๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘๐‘’ ๐‘Ž ๐‘™๐‘œ๐‘ก ๐‘œ๐‘“ ๐‘”๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘ข๐‘‘๐‘’๏ผŒ๐ผ ๐‘”๐‘’๐‘ก ๐‘Ž ๐‘™๐‘œ๐‘ก ๐‘œ๐‘“ ๐‘”๐‘Ÿ๐‘Ž๐‘ก๐‘–๐‘ก๐‘ข๐‘‘๐‘’ ๐‘“๐‘Ÿ๐‘œ๐‘š๏ผŽI began starting my days with a cute little journal called โ€œThe Gratitude Journalโ€ (bought on Amazon, under $20).  It gives you prompts like, โ€œDescribe your favourite person and list their best qualitiesโ€ or โ€œDescribe your favourite time of dayโ€.  By focusing on my haves, rather than my have-nots, I am reminded daily how fortunate I am.  I live a good life, despite its challenges and its ups and downs.  Those are a part of life.  I got my son into doing this as well as journalling and itโ€™s actually brought him from being a straight Cs and one D to being straight Bs and one A student.  If youโ€™re reading this right now, be grateful for your internet connection (too soon, Rogers?), your technology that allows you to view it, and the extra money and time you have to be perusing a companionโ€™s website.  Iโ€™m grateful to you for reading my words that I take such care in writing.

I hope this helps someone today.  And perhaps itโ€™s easier to understand me and why youโ€™ll see me smiling and happy probably at least 80% of the time (cโ€™mon, no one is happy 24/7!).  I live a good life and I love what I do ๐Ÿ’œ and I hope you do, too!

Much Affection,
Kathryn
